Bookmobiles Bring World of Reading to Rural Communities

Yesterday was National Bookmobile day a day to celebrate our nation’s bookmobiles and the dedicated library professionals who provide this valuable and essential service to their communities every day. Yesterday’s recognition for bookmobiles is a part of the weeklong celebration of Library week.
I’m a huge fan of libraries — especially rural libraries— and the many services available to the public. Growing up, the Bookmobile arrived every other week at my elementary school and it is a very fond memory.
Washington State University Information Technology Specialist Barbara Stone shares about the benefits for rural communities that the bookmobile service provides.
Stone: “Well, I think it is difficult for many rural families to get to a library on a regular basis and if you can’t get there regularly it is difficult to check out books because you have to have them at a certain time. So bringing the library essentially to people in rural areas made it so that they could expand their horizons and expand their world view from their farms essentially. That was true all over the West.”
