USPB Taking Potato Nutrition Message to the Next Level

The new Potato-Friendly Salad Bar Industry Challenge that was approved at last month’s United States Potato Board’s Annual Meeting is taking the potato industry’s nutritional message — that potatoes are nutritional powerhouses — and are moving into action by bringing potatoes to young consumers. USPB Vice President Industry Communications and Policy David Fraser shares
Fraser: “What this represents is we have talked for years. Talked to consumers about potato nutrition. This is the next evolution or next level of experiential marketing of putting potatoes in front of school kids and say, ‘Hey think of the potato as something different — we can do creative things with it.’ That is really the program is getting the salad bars in the schools is one step. Really the harder part for us and where the work will be — and is exciting — is actually work with the schools: the school lunch ladies, the nutritionist in the school distract, the dietitians — everyone who is responsible for the school lunch program. And say, ‘Here are recipes with potatoes you can use that kids will love. That make potatoes fun and they’re still healthy and nutritious and still fit within your school lunch guidelines.”
