Retail Petite Size Potato Category Continues to Grow

The United States Potato Board has seen an increase in dollar share in its retail sector of the petite size potato as USPB Global Retail Marketing Manager Sarah Reece shares
Reece: “We’re are continuing to see growth in the petite category which currently accounts for 10.2 percent of fresh potato category dollars. When we look at the share of the category for 52 weeks — which is ending December 27, 2014 — and when you compare that to the 2013 numbers, we saw an increase of 12.1 percent in dollars and 12.5 percent in volume. These increases are compared to traditional speciality as well as other potatoes in the category. We are also seeing petite potato category share increase across the entire U.S. with the strongest growth in the Eastern part.”
So why is this category becoming so popular with consumers?
Reece: “In general, we are seeing a lot more petite potatoes being carried in retails stores — which can account for a portion of the increase. But we also are getting feedback from consumers that they like the petite size potatoes because they are quick to prepare and easy to use in different recipes.”
