Heather Hodson told me that she had always fished with the guys and just kind of wanted to learn how to do all things fly fishing by herself. That included taking flyfishing classes and starting a group called Spokane Women On-the-Fly. "I kind of befriended all the guys and decided I wanted to get some of the women involved in the group as well. So back in April of last year, I decided to start a women's group. In Spokane called Spokane Women On-the-Fly. using social media to my advantage, I tried to get as many women involved in the sport as I could. Talk about your success rate. Have you gotten a lot of people involved? Yes. Our last fly tying class I limited it to 10 people so that I could give everybody enough time and as much attention as they need. So right now there is even a waiting list." Heather says that it has now grown to 40 active women just in the group. "What do you feel is the primary reason that women get involved in your group? Somebody like their dad or their husband or their significant other has brought them into the sport whether it be year fishing or flyfishing. They've been shown that and they have a real interest and they have a feeling with us of not being intimidated and it's an opportunity to hang out with a bunch of other women. The social aspect is huge along with the fact that there are truly outdoor women." Heather added that there is also a safety aspect meaning a woman out on a river by herself may not be the greatest of ideas. WomenOntheFly.com
