Update on Apples. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

The 2014 apple crop is coming off the trees and by all accounts will be another record breaking crop. Todd Fryhover with the Washington Apple Commission talks about how some of the different varieties are faring.

FRYHOVER: It appears that the Golden crop is just slightly larger than normal but I think that's more indicative of growers out in the field leaving unsalable fruit in the orchard and bringing in just the good fruit. A lot of that has to do with just the record crop volume in general. We're seeing a few more Gala's than we anticipated. Looks like the Fuji's might come in at estimate, maybe slightly less. Granny's slightly less than estimate. It's hard to say what's going to happen on the Cripps Pink. It's still out there being harvested today but things look real good across all varieties. We know we need to concentrate on Red Delicious as the domestic market continues to move away from that variety so we're ready willing and able.

Labor was a major concern going into this harvest.

FRYHOVER: We talk about labor a lot and obviously it's our number one concerned this year I think primarily due to the use, heavy use of the H2-A program there hasn't been as many labor issues as we had anticipated. Certainly the cool, rainy weather the last several days is going to back up what remains of harvest but generally speaking I think labor remains tight but adequate at this point.

That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
