Friend and colleague Tommy Allen went hunting Whitetail with his brother Austin. "We were up in the same area where I run cattle. I know the area pretty well. We had to deer tags, my brother Austin and myself were just looking to get some nice quality Whitetail or mule deer. We were up there glassing it pretty hard looking for some decent bucks to harvest and we just kept running into bears. First thing, opening morning, I ran into one and shot it. Killed it right there on the spot. Started packing it out. It's not that much fun to back out of there so my brother and I said no more bears. Later, the next day, we were hunting and my brother went down to push a draw and he was sneaking along very quietly at the bottom of the draw through the hawthorn trees, just a prickly grove of trees that covered the bottom of the canyon so you can't see very far. We did have the idea that there might be a couple of big bucks bedded down because we saw a white tail and a fun jump up and snort with a hiss, the kind of sound will make when they are nervous. We thought something was down there but we didn't know what. So my brothers down in the draw and I am up high and I waited a while. I heard three shots and then nothing. I sat there waiting for a nice buck to appear but nothing ran out. All of a sudden I heard my brother hollered that he has a bear down. Come to find out he was in that thick brush and the bear was between 15 and 20 feet from him." Extremely thick brush, face-to-face with a huge bear within arm's length... no alternative but to shoot.
