USDA Announces Completion and Start to GMO Wheat Investigation Friday

More than 18 months after genetically engineered wheat was found on an Eastern Oregon farm, a 12,000 page report released by USDA's Animal Plant Health Inspection Agency last Friday has determined the event was an isolated occurrence.

Washington Grain Commission CEO Glen Squires expresses satisfaction with the conclusions of the report.

Squires: "The investigation took quite a while but what it really shows that it was a thorough complete investigation. USDA sen made the comment that it was the most thorough they had ever done. The findings really concluded what we already knew — there is no food safety issue. There is not any GE wheat with those traits in the commercial channels."

In the same announcement of the completion of the Oregon investigation, USDA announced that APHIS has opened a new investigation into a regulatory compliance issue involving GE wheat found growing at a research facility that was the previous site of authorized field trials in Montana. Genetic testing shows that the GE wheat at this research facility location is significantly different from the GE wheat found growing at the Oregon farm last year.
