I had a discussion with Mike Schlegel, retired Dept of Fish and Game official about lawyer fees related to environmental groups who are trying to stop the management of wolves. He brought up the Equal Access to Justice Act and it reminded me of a time to her three years ago that I had similar discussions with representatives from the beef industry. “According to the stipulations of the Equal Access to Justice Act, I think there is $150 per hour on attorney fees but they are justifying it as specialized law and that is why they are getting greater compensation. Some legislator from Wyoming put together some data and between 2002 and 2007, $4.7 billion was paid out in the Equal Access to Justice Act. Not all of it went to environmental issues but that is a tremendous burden on taxpayers. Given a modern-day situation, wolves will not be exterminated like they were in the turn-of-the-century. It’s just not going to happen. No matter how hard agencies push hunting and trapping on wolves, they are not going to exterminate them. When the trapper was working in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness last year, reporters for the Idaho statesman used the term extermination in the titles of their articles. One guy on horseback in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness is just not going to exterminate the wolves. It’s just all emotional based.
