Food Apps

Food Apps. I'm Greg Martin with today's Line On Agriculture.

More and more we are seeing people with smartphones and those smartphones run all sorts of apps. Danielle Nierenberg, co-founder of the Food Tank says they have come up with a list of apps that can help consumers and farmers.

NIERENBERG: The ones that we really try to highlight are for eaters and consumers and whether it's Locavore which helps consumers find where their local farmer's markets are or the traceability apps that let consumers know exactly where and how their food is produced.

She says that these apps can help eliminate a lot of food waste.

NIERENBERG: People are more interested in food and knowing more about it than ever before so these apps are really just another way for consumers to get closer to the food system. I think probably my favorite ones are the find fruit kinds of apps that let urban consumers - a connection to the food system through letting them know where fruit trees are in parks and in neighborhoods across cities.

The list of apps is available on their website at foodtank.org.

NIERENBERG: Food Tank, the Food Think Tank is a think tank that Ellen Gustafson and I cofounded to really make the food system better and we do this through research and reports, newsletters as a lot of convening efforts. We have events around different different topics we are focusing on including food waste. We're really devoted to making these issues really palatable for a wide audience.

That's today's Line On Agriculture. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
