Springtime Reminders for Wheat Growers
Last week marked the first day of spring and most my farmer friends are itching to begin their spring work if they haven’t already started. Syngenta’s Pacific Northwest Agronomy Representative Don Drader reminds wheat growers of three areas of focus for this springDrader: “The first of those is just seed bed preparation or ground preparation. They need a good firm, seed bed well fertilizer to get that crop started off correctly. So they should be thinking about tillage practices that will be used. Are there weeds out there that they should be spraying? Are there glyphosate- tolerant or resistant weeds? So they need to be thinking about what they will be using to control those weeds.”
Secondly growers need to be considering the varieties they will be planting. The third thing is seed preparation as Drader explains
Drader: “Seed care is extremely important to protect that wheat plant early. So seed treatments are very important. Again we have the custom blends which is a mixture of five different A.I.s so a grower doesn’t need to know specifically which disease or pest he has out there because the combination of the custom blends — we have multiple blends or multiple AIs helping to protect that seed. The healthier we start that plant off earlier the better chance that plant has to survive the season and maximize its yield potential.”
