Potato Growers Betting that Seahawks MASH the Broncos

Well, as the Super Bowl approaches there has been a lot of taunting between fans as to whose team -- be it the Seattle Seahawks or the Denver Broncos -- will prevail on Sunday.

The Washington State Potato Commission and the Colorado Potato Administrative Committee are taking it to a whole other level by throwing down a challenge that will benefit hungry people in the winning team’s state.

Washington State Potato Commission Executive Director Chris Voigt shares more about this good-natured rivalry with their spud-growing brethren in the Centennial state.

Voigt: “We are betting 500 pounds of potatoes for every point that is scored in the Super Bowl. So when Seattle wins -- let’s say 47 to 3 -- that is 50 points times 500 pounds of potatoes so that works out to 25,000 pounds of potatoes that the Colorado growers are going to have to donate to a food bank in Seattle. And let’s say that hell freezes over and Seahawks lose then we would reciprocate and provide 25,000 pounds of potatoes to a food bank in Denver.”

If you want to see more of the lighthearted teasing you can go to the Washington State Potato Commission’s Facebook page to see the videos that have been going back and forth.

Voigt: “We’ve had fun with our responses. We’re trying to post video everyday on our Facebook page. You can see the banter back and forth between Washington and Colorado.”

Go Seahawks and MASH the broncos this Sunday!
