My good friend Brian Herbert and I play hockey together. He's Canadian...so he's tremendous. He was telling me about his friend Ruggy who's a fishing guide in British Columbia. "I have been fishing since I was four years old. My dad started fishing in the 70s. The fishing was unbelievable back then. Once I got a little older, I went and got myself a boat. There is all sorts of rivers around here but for me it is always been about ocean fishing. My father started guiding 25 years ago. What he would do was go up to the lodges up in the Queen Charlotte's. There are probably 20 lodges up there. They fly you up there and the company I work for, we are called fill in guides. Each lodge usually hold 50 people and every 4 to 5 days they switch out those 50 people and 50 new people come in. The extra guides just fly in with the guests. Most of the boats are aluminum, between 18 and 22 feet, they take quite the beating. They are built for West Coast water. Sometimes you are up there and people are paying $5000 for a four-day fishing outing and you cannot always control the weather so we are out sometimes in 30 to 40 knot winds and 3 to 4 meter seas so it can get dangerous. There are five species of salmon that we fish for with chinook being the main one. That is the king salmon and they can get up to 75 to 80 pounds up there. Usually every day there are 2 to 3, 30 to 40 pounders coming in. Most of the fish are between 15 and 25 pounds and each guest can take four per day.
