Ben Doherty at Sportsman's Warehouse talks goose calls. "Bill Saunders makes very good duck and goose calls but he is more well known for his goose calls. So let's talk about the goose calls. Okay. When it comes to goose calls I tell people to get away from the flutes. Some of the old-fashioned guys still like to blow the flutes but you do not get as much range with them. Usually you cannot do as much with them so the short reed whose call is definitely where it is. From clucks to loud calls to just switching it up and making it sound like multiple geese. Most of the people blowing in competition as well as shooting a lot of these are blowing a short reed. Those are not mating calls, those are come on down the food is good, right. Absolutely, it is just chatter. You can actually get into what all of those calls mean. You can get really technical. But most of the time you are just trying to call those birds down, it is more like a gathering call. What you are trying to do is mimic real beasts and pull them down. Right now you are in the middle of their migration from north to south so this is the best time of the year to hunt them.
