11-19 SS Alaskan Caribou

An Alaskan caribou hunt. We all know executive chef Randy King and his passion for wilderness hunting. "I recently went up to Alaska in hot pursuit of some caribou. That was our main goal. We had a guy who was ready to go with us. Literally, the old saying, break a leg... Well that's what happened to him he broke his leg three weeks prior to the trip. We had to call in a favor from a cousin of mine and she decided to go. We went to what is called the Hall road or Dalton Highway. It is the poor man's caribou hunt. If you go up there you have to archery hunt within 5 miles of the Hall road and if you go past 5 miles, you can use your rifle. Walking the tundra is like walking on a big sponge so it was quite an adventure to hike out there. Saw a grizzly bear right in the same Bush that I was in. Let me tell you that that made a few things shrink up internally. I think that is called pucker, right? (Laughter) for a prospective, from Boise to Coeur d'Alene is approximately 380 miles. The population in between is very limited. We went from Fairbanks to Dead Horse and that is 414 miles with three gas stations in between. It was desolate and expansive. It was unbelievable, the amount of country that we saw.
