Wheat Crops Progress

 Today USDA Meteorologist Brad Rippey shares the overall crop progress report for both spring and winter wheat. Rippey gives the current winter wheat progress

Rippey: “The harvesting number is 11 percent nationally. That is significantly behind the five-year average of 25 percent.Thirty one percent good to excellent and 43 percent poor to very poor.”

However, in the Pacific Northwest all three states reports winter wheat heading is well ahead of their five-year average for this time of year. Washington reports 92 percent of crop heading, Idaho has 56 percent of the crop heading and Oregon has 95 percent heading. And far as the condition of the crop -- the Pacific Northwest is beginning to show some stress, though still better than some areas of the country. Idaho reports 81 percent of winter wheat crop in good to excellent condition. Oregon has 32 percent good to excellent, and 34 percent poor to very poor, and Washington reports with 49 percent good to excellent and 17 percent poor to very poor.

Rippey gives the overall statistics the spring wheat crop.

Rippey: “Nationally 92 percent of the spring wheat planted, five points behind the five-year average, eight points behind last year when planting was complete. Overall looking pretty good with 68 percent good to excellent and 5 percent poor to very poor.”

Idaho reports 66 percent of their spring wheat good to excellent with 17 percent of the crop heading. Washington reports 34 percent of its spring wheat to be good to excellent and 24 poor to very poor and 28 percent of the spring wheat heading. Oregon reports that 23 percent of the crop is considered good to excellent and 28 percent is rated poor to very poor.
