APHIS Needs to Give Conclusion Soon

On Friday, Animal Plant Health Inspection Service issued a statement that the finding of biotech wheat in an Oregon field is an isolated occurrence.

The APHIS statement says that as of Friday QUOTE: USDA has neither found nor been informed of anything that would indicate that this incident amounts to more than a single isolated incident in a single field on a single farm. All information collected so far shows no indication of the presence of GE wheat in commerce. Investigators are conducting a thorough review. Unquote. They also state that investigators are continuing to interview approximately 200 area growers.

Washington Grain Commission CEO Glen Squires says more information is needed and needed soon:

Squires: “We need a conclusion from APHIS to identify the magnitude of this find. If it is truly isolated, they need to state that and give the market assurance that it’s not in the supply and it doesn’t exist anywhere. It was just this one isolated incident. So far they’ve said that they haven’t found anything yet but clearly the market needs more definitive answers.”

Squires ays he hopes this announcement takes the investigation one step closer to its conclusion.

Squires: “That conclusion is needed. Harvest is coming. We need more information. The market needs the information. Japan needs the information. We need information from APHIS.”
