Improving Grain Storage Technologies

In the last several decades there have been dramatic technology improvements in agriculture as we all know: genetics, equipment improvement, precision ag to name a few.

One area that is often overlooked is the advancements in grain storage. This industry too has seen many improvements as Adams Incorporated Sales Manager Brett Adams explains.

Adams: “In the storage industry, there have been a number of improvements over the past 10 to 15 years, that the Northwest has not taken really not adapted. Technologies that are commonplace in the mid-west: aeration, full-floor aeration in bin sweeps. A lot of operational practices have changed and our knowledge of benefits of full-floor aeration has improved a lot, especially in knowing how much yield can be increase by having some of these systems in place.”

Adams shares an example of a farmer who gained corn yield with his recently replaced bins.

Adams: “They got a 7.2 percent yield increase because they were able to cut their corn at a higher moisture and control the atmosphere at which the corn was dried in the bin which allowed them, especially at today’s market price, to make quite a bit of money. They were actually able to pay for those additional systems in the first year.”
