Society of Range Management

I’m KayDee Gilkey with the Northwest Farm and Ranch Report after this.

Last week more than 1,400 people from around the world traveled to Spokane, Washington for the 65th Annual Meeting of the Society of Range Management.

The mission of this organization is to promote the professional development and continuing education of members and the public and the stewardship of rangeland resources.

I visited with Kevin Guinn one of the three co-chairs of this annual meeting to learn more about the Society of Range Management.

Guinn: “The Society of Range Management is all about sustainability of the resources: the land itself; the ranchers who are trying to make a living from the ranch; the wildlife who are very intricate to that. We are very much about preserving the opens space.”

So who makes up their membership?

Guinn: “The Society of Range Management is a very diverse organization. We have 3,000 to 3,500 members. We are comprised of ranchers, university researcher and students, agency folks such as Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service and Natural Resource Service, state agencies. We’ve got a lot of members from tribes across the Western United States. A lot of our members are from Canada and some from Mexico.”

If you are a rancher who depends on range for forage, you might want to learn more about this organization by going to their website at www.rangelands.org.
