4-8 SS Steelies Go Small

Hey everybody want some great tips on steelhead fishing? You’ve dialed in to the right place… Sportsman’s Spotlight.

Greg Kain runs Kain’s Fishing Adventures and Lodge way up in Sitka, Alaska. I’ll tell you one thing when it comes to steelhead fishing, this guy knows his stuff. Particularly when fishing the Snake Here he is with great advice, less is more: “ I am a big fisherman so I prefer to fish bait. These fish are kind of small so you want to refine your tackle down. I see so many guys using such big and heavy and gaudy gear. Size your gear down, the fish are a little bit smaller on the Snake and they don’t want a big chunk of bait, they want something a little bit smaller, extend your leader out a little bit longer and a little bit more natural presentation when they are drifting. I think you will succeed a lot better than some of the big gaudy stuff that I see used. What about trolling with glow plugs or bobber fishing with Malibu jigs? Yup same thing if you’re going to be bobber fishing, size your jig down a little bit, put a bit smaller shrimp on their or prawn meat versus putting a big prawn on there. Size it down. It doesn’t have to be as big as some of the stuff I see. I’m using a number four hook, sometimes I use a number six hook and really small stuff.” For all the info,  Google Kainsfishingadventures.com
