 Hi Everyone…What do you do if you’re out on a hunting or fishing trip somewhere in the middle of nowhere and an emergency occurs? Answer….be prepared. I’ll be back in a minute with just such a circumstance. Our flyfishing expert and hunting officianado Josh Mills was out bird hunting and as we learned yesterday his buddy’s German short haire gashed himself badly. We pick up the story with Josh. Marcus’s German short haired pointer  was torn wide open and was bleeding profusely and it set in a chain reaction get back to  the car as fast as we can, put a tourniquet on it as best we could,  and get him back to the animal hospital. But what helps and what saved the day was the first aid kit that Marcus carries with him everywhere. The simple item of athletic tape  allowed us to bind a T-shirt and a towel under Rex’s chest to stop the bleeding and get us back to an emergency vet on Sunday. Without that simple first aid kit the consequences could have been much, much worse. So my suggestion to anybody that is out there hunting and uses their dog to help them hunt, it  good idea to visit your local sporting goods store, and find some things that would help, gauze pads,  athletic tape, antiseptic, coagulant, quick dry, all these things you can carry in your truck because it could mean the difference between life and death for your dog. Those dogs hunt so hard and they hunt with such passion they just go, go, go and sometimes their body pays the price. And those German shorthaired pointers have such thin skin that it made quite the wound but just having that first aid kit and having that tape saved the day.
