9-10 FB Road Funding
Governor Otter looking for the facts…just the facts regarding the roads in Idaho. I’m David Sparks and we’ll update you on what that means coming up next. Apparently, as we look down the road toward an election campaign between incumbent Governor Otter and his democratic challenger Keith Allred, the issue of road funding is appearing on the horizon. Mr. Allred has gathered information that suggests to him that everyday motorists pay a disproportionate amount of money in the form of gas taxes and that these taxes should be reduced in favor of increasing taxes on large trucks. That seems reasonable given that large trucks are harder on our roads, bridges and infrastructure, but the Governor responds that there is a task force at work and they haven’t completed their duties. In other words let’s wait for the facts. Here’s the Governor’s spokesperson, John Hanian: “ You have to get people to understand what the problem is and get their brain around it before you can affect change under the process that we work under.” Roads have always been a major concern of the governor…as he says its that concrete ribbon that links commerce between states. Obviously both candidates would agree that keeping our roads open and in good condition is critical for our most important financial asset…agriculture.
