Montana resident Mark Holyoak has a story about breaking in as a deer hunter using an old Winchester that his grandfather had given him. With little experience and a gun he had never used he set out to harvest his 1st deer. "My 1st deer hunting story, my son and I went out, little town up in the mountains and it was getting to be dusk and earlier in the day, because I had never shot anything before, I had a doe 60 yards away and I was trying to creep up on it and lean on a tree so I could get a good shot and it ran off but anyway we continued to walk around and write about dusk we came upon a logging road and I saw a deer making its way slowly down the hillside, it never saw me, this was in November during rut, it had its head down the whole time and it was in a section that had been clear-cut previously but it had been a number of years, so there was a lot of smaller shrubs and trees and bushes. I put my crosshairs on an opening and right when it walked through I shot. I knew I hit it and we went walking and looking and looking around these ponderosa pines and lodge polls and it's getting darker. My son and I need up at approximately the spot where I thought I had shot it, it was starting to get dark, and I looked down and there is the antler of a 6 x 5 which is still the largest deer I ever shot. The thing that is funny about it is that I had no idea it was a buck.
