Telling Ag's Story
Ag Inspiration's Kim Bremmer shares some advice for farmers and ranchers who are interested in engaging in conversations with consumers.
Bremmer: "Well we tend to get defensive because all farmers are very passionate about their work, their livelihood, and the history that they have on their farms. But I think it is important that we need to do more listening to consumers. We have to understand where they are coming from. We have to ask questions, to invite the dialogue. To figure out where their perspective is coming from, where they are getting their information and then share our information and our perspective. We tend to do it out of order. We always want to share and really kind of puke our science on people but we really have these inherent shared values. We own the message that matters. We are more sustainable than we've ever been. Sustainability is not an end point. We continue to produce more food with fewer resources than ever before. We do that in how we care for the animals and the land and make safe food. We are always making continual improvements. It's the mantra of agriculture in our country — always has been always will be. We just need to speak up and talk about it more."
