Is this wine too expensive?

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. I was shopping with a friend when she turned and asked; Is this wine too expensive? I replied, I don’t know, you tell me. I have come to realize in my own case that if I think a wine is too expensive then it’s probably saying more about my budget than the wine.

So the question of -- a wine being too expensive or overpriced is actually only a question if my budget is feeling a little tight. You know that most of us will never say out loud Wow! I just can’t believe I love this $6 bottle of wine - - - it’s too cheap! We never question the thinking of the producer able to make an inexpensive wine, we only question those making spendier wines. So I’m now in the camp that says it’s more about my budget and not about the wine being over priced. And I think that’s perfectly valid, because I never seem to wonder about the quality of the wine I know I like - but I can’t afford it at the time. Like most of us, I have a budget that varies from time to time. I just go looking for something I can enjoy that is within my means. That’s where my retail wine specialist comes in handy – they can help me out and keep things interesting and within my price range. When I am willing to spend more I like to treat myself to a wine that may have a limited production or that has a great reputation and sounds as though it is made in an interesting style. There are many valid reasons a wine may have a higher retail price and I can respect that. So talk with the wine specialist where you shop and know that it’s your budget that determines whether or not the wine is too expensive, not the wine itself. And thanks for joining me on today’s Vine to Wine.
