Property Tax on Ag Land and Trump Cabinet Hearings
From the Ag Information Network, I'm Bob Larson with your Agribusiness Update. Many Midwestern states are wrestling with how to reduce property taxes on agricultural land.
In Nebraska, Governor Pete Ricketts has proposed shifting from a market-based assessment to an income-based assessment for ag land, saying people are buying ag land NOT for production purposes, and that is driving up the price beyond the income it can support.
The method has been adopted by a number of states which rely on agriculture.
The Senate is holding hearings this week for President-elect Trump's nominees to run departments with strong ties to agriculture.
Today, Trump's pick to head the EPA, Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, will have his confirmation hearing.
Other hearings include the Interior Secretary, Montana Representative Ryan Zinke, and Commerce Department's Wilbur Ross.
Trump still has not announced his pick for Secretary of Agriculture, but some reports indicate Trump will have all of cabinet posts named before inauguration day, Friday.
