British Columbia Guide Outfitters owner Mark Werner takes people big game hunting in some of the most beautiful and rugged terrain in the world. He comes by the rugged part naturally as is evidenced by the story of his heritage. "My grandfather had immigrated in the early 1900s north of Prince George and had hunted black bear and moose in the early 1800s and they had to can it all and they would can hundreds of quarts of Moose and fish. They logged and built churches by hand, they build homesteads, they built Bible camps, and they build remote cabins and boats in the bush so they were real pioneers. I was actually speaking to my uncle who was 85 yesterday and he was in with my grandparents and he told me they would actually can 300 quarts of huckleberry, 300 quarts of wild blueberries and over 400 quarts of Moose meat, all chopped up into little pieces and made into stews with pepper, garlic gravy sauces and they were canned because they had no refrigeration. They lived in a very remote area so my grandmother was canning all the time. That was just the highlights, never mind the vegetable garden and she canned all of that. They figure about 3000 quarts per year. And that was for family? Yes for family but they also pastored several churches. They had a whole circuit of churches that they build from scratch.
