Canada and Mexico are poised to level some major tariffs on U.S. ag products in retaliation to the Country of Origin measure. The WTO has said the ball is in the U.S. court as to how this will play out and Congressman Dan Newhouse from Washington says he believes there may be some hope.
NEWHOUSE: I'm very optimistic, very hopeful we will get done at some point here in the next few days. It will probably spill into next week. Whether or not the COOL language, the Country of Origin language is included in a short-term spending measure to get us through the deadline or whether it will be in the final package still remains to be seen. I've been very engaged in that conversation and I've very hopeful we can have that language included to avert the tariffs by Canada and Mexico.
Oregon has ordered a quarantine to restrict shipments of susceptible plants from nine counties after the discovery of Xylella fastidiosa, a bacterial disease which was first reported in a Hood River pear nursery. The ODA has since found that pear trees from the National Clonal Germplasm Depository in Corvallis were infected with the bacteria. The bacteria often kills the plants after showing drought-like symptoms.
