Idaho Animal Cruelty & $7 A Gallon Milk
Idaho Animal Cruelty & $7 A Gallon Milk plus Food Forethought. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Northwest Report.
Another dairy, this time in Idaho has come under fire for animal cruelty after and animal rights group shot undercover video that showed workers stomping, dragging and beating cows inside a milking barn. The video was shot using a hidden camera by a member of the animal rights group Mercy for Animals inside Bettencourt Dairies' Dry Creek Dairy in Hansen. The three workers involved have been fired and are being charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty.
A lot of “what if’s” are flying about after Congress left business on the table. New York Senator Charles Schumer said that if no farm bill was passed - consumers could see six to seven-dollars per gallon milk. And while that is possible University of Wisconsin Professor Dr. Robert Cropp says it is unlikely.
CROPP: They are right from the standpoint if they do not pass anything for dairy by January 1st, we revert back to the permanent legislation of the 1949 act which milk is supported between 75 and 90% of parity. While with inflation and everything, January 1st, 75% of parity would be somewheres 38-$39 cwt - I don’t think it’s going to happen. I don’t think they’ll let that happen but that’s what they’re saying and by law that’s what would happen but I don’t think it will.
Now with today’s Food Forethought, here’s Lacy Gray.
October is a very popular “National Event Month”. There are over sixty events observed during this calendar month; Better Breakfast Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, National Pork and Chicken Month, and one of my favorites, Mom & Apple Pie Month. October certainly has a full dance card. The list of events is nothing if not eclectic, and in some instances downright weird - for heaven’s sake, Hug a Texas Chef Month! Lots of countries around the world adopt particular causes during specific calendar months, but the U.S. has a tendency to go just a whee bit overboard when it comes to creating national month events. Perhaps it’s our penchant for trying to be politically correct. We certainly don’t want it to appear that anyone has been overlooked, or ostracized. This has certainly led to a broad list to choose from, but just because something has been designated as a national month event doesn’t mean you have to observe it. Though I might enjoy partaking in National Dessert Month, there is no way anyone is going to get me on a pair of roller skates in this late stage of the game.
Thanks Lacy. That’s today’s Northwest Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
