Melamine Arrests & Orange Production Cut

Melamine Arrests & Orange Production Cut. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Northwest Report.

Remember some time back all the trouble with melamine in infant formula’s and milk? Now Chinese police have arrested 96 people for lacing milk powder with the toxic additive. Last July, samples of milk powder found in northwest China's Gansu and Qinghai provinces had levels of melamine up to 500 times the permitted limit, underscoring the lax enforcement of food safety in the country. Among those arrested, 17 had been convicted, including two people sentenced to life in prison

Oranges just might be a bit higher and harder to come by. The December freezes may have cut citrus production prospects somewhat according to the USDA’s Gary Crawford.

CRAWFORD: Right now USDA statisticians say the Florida crop of oranges will be 6.3 million tons, that is down 2% from the USDA’s December forecast which came before the freeze. On Tuesday the USDA Florida field office, statistician’s office there will release a special report on citrus freeze damage based on a survey of growers that is just finishing up right now. For the U.S. as a whole the Florida situation taking that U.S. orange number down 2% from a year ago just under 8.8 million tons.
