Big Apple Media Tour Brings Farmers to Consumers

Producers who are willing to engage consumers in conversations about food and and ag practices are important especially with most of the public two to three generations removed from the farm or ranch. Washington Dairy producer Krista Stauffer spent a quick three days in the Big Apple recently sharing what she does with New York local, regional and national media. Between the four participating Common Ground ag women volunteers, they teamed up by twos to speak to various media channels.
Stauffer: “We represented Common Ground and farmers all across the United States. We focused on Thanksgiving traditions so we had two recipes that we were focusing on. So they were to ask us - Why is farming important? What do farmers do on Thanksgiving? How does the food get to the table? Different questions like that. Between the four of us — we were grouped in twos — we did over 24 interviews I believe with various radio and news stations throughout the United States.”
She continues with the type of information she shared during the interviews.
Stauffer: “Most people are two to three generations removed from the farm and that really showed in the questions we were asked. A lot of people really don’t understand what we do or how or why. A lot of people don’t understand that as a dairy farmer on Thanksgiving we still have to go out and feed and milk our cows. So it was really nice to tell people that and have an audience to broadcast that to people to say, ‘Farmers are working really hard to get that food to your table.’”
