Trade Talks with China Pt 1

With today's Fruit Grower Report, I'm Bob Larson. President Trump and Chinese president Xi spent some time together over the weekend at the G-20 Summit in Japan, but there are few details.

However, there are plenty of rumors, some that the two have about 90% of the deal done.

U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse says there is talk around Washington D.C. as well...

NEWHOUSE ... "Most people are saying that there will be an agreement to continue negotiations. I have seen some of those reports that you've referred to. There's some rumors that they're very close to an agreement, but I can't substantiate that yet, so that may be just wishful thinking at this point."

But, Newhouse says the optimistic rumors are not terribly surprising either ...

NEWHOUSE ... "Most people are of the opinion that this is an important enough agreement to both countries that the two presidents will agree that we have to keep negotiating."

Newhouse says there are also alternatives being talked about ...

NEWHOUSE ... "I've heard a couple of sources say that they make take some of the parts of the agreement that are completed and allow those to move forward and then continue working on the harder ones, but not let those harder issues hold up some of the things, the work that's already been done. Again, that's kind of a rumor. I can't substantiate that."

President Trump has pledged to hold off on levying an additional 25% tariffs on Chinese exports to the U.S. allowing Washington and Beijing to reboot negotiations.

Listen tomorrow for more on the trade talks and how northwest growers are counting on it.
