Vital Wine Healthcare Pt 3

With today's Fruit Grower Report, I'm Bob Larson. Walla Walla's Vital Wines is out to make a difference in the healthcare needs of those who work in the mostly seasonal industry. Vital's winemaker, Ashley Trout says all profits go to the S.O.S. Clinic which is kept open for limited hours thanks to an all-volunteer staff of nurses and doctors...

TROUT ... "Until we can have just a barrage of volunteer providers then the clinic isn't going to be a full-time clinic which is why it's so important to also have places like the Yakima Farm Workers Clinic, which works on a sliding scale fee, the S.O.S. is free, but it's not open all the time. The Yakima Farm Workers Clinic is not free, but it does work on a sliding fee scale. It's opened many more hours."

Trout says it's been an incredibly fulfilling and heartwarming experience ...

TROUT ... "Every year, I have to turn down between 10 and 30 tons of free fruit and we have, just three days ago I picked up the phone and somebody who I didn't even ask for a donation from, asked if they could donate a bunch of used barrels. Somebody else asked how they could help and I told them and they said, yeah."

But, Trout says there are other ways to help ...

TROUT ... "And then another person asked if they could donate wine to an event that we do every year where, it's going to be on April 11th, every dinner ticket that we sell, and this is annual, is a seat for you and then a donated seat for a harvest worker who harvested for Vital."

The fourth annual Vital Wines Benefit Dinner is Thursday night, tomorrow, so go to www.vitalwinery.com for more info on how you can help the cause.
