Cattle and calf production remain the top money makers for Ag producers in Colorado.

Hay reigns in crop sales.

Bill Meyer at the Lakewood office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service tell Colorado Ag Today no big surprises in the ag numbers available on line at NASS.USDA.GOV.

The crop value of sales was 2.2 billion dollars. And the total value of livestock sales was 5.3 billion dollars. Livestock is still the big value of production in Colorado. A lot of those big feedlots that account for that. Cattle and calves make up 76.3 percent of the livestock sales. Corn was the number one portion of the crop sales with 32.2 percent, followed by Hay which was 17.6 percent and wheat 13.8 percent. Hay is the number two commodity.

Also of interest, in 2017 4600 farms in Colorado reported using some form or renewable energy. Meyer says that number was more than double the number of farms using renewable energy in 2012. Most of the renewable energy is coming from solar panels. Solar use also doubled from 2012.
