I'm Bob Larson. 'Food Safety for Farmers & Consumers' is the theme for a Small Farm Conference that begins tomorrow at the Yakima Convention Center.

The day-and-a-half conference is sponsored by the Center for Latino Farmers and will bring together producers, professionals, stakeholders, Ag associations, and others to hear from experts on topics of food safety facing small producers...

MARIA GIEDRA ... "So, we are excited. We are expecting about a 100 to 150, my goal is 100 to 150 ranchers from Washington state to learn about the agriculture changes that's going to take place. We have experts coming all the way from Washington D.C., from FDA, to talk to our farmers and ranchers and see what other challenges they're facing right now in Washington state."

But, the Center's Maria Giedra says food safety will be the focus ...

MARIA GIEDRA ... "So, we have speakers coming from Washington D.C. that's going to talk about food safety certification, farm prevention best-site practices, organic transition, and the trends and data that's happened in the last year and the projections that we expect as far as exports in agriculture. And, they're going to talk a little bit also of the difference in production and revenue, organic versus conventional. So, we have so many topics for our new farmers and ranchers."

The Small Farm Conference is targeting new beginning farmers and ranchers and farm workers transitioning to farm ownership ... and it's FREE. The conference runs from 5 to 9 Tuesday evening and then again Wednesday from 7:30 to 3:45.

You can register by calling the Center for Latino Farms at 509-453-3157.
