Stone Fruit Harvest Update & National Farm Safety & Health Week

I'm Lacy Gray with Washington Ag Today.

While the state's peach, nectarine, and plum crops could not be considered record breakers this year, BJ Thurlby with the Washington State Fruit Commission says that we did have a record crop in terms of apricots.

THURLBY: The apricot crop this year was close to 750 thousand boxes, which is an absolute record for Washington - the largest fresh crop we've ever packed and sold. We had a good year. Level of promotion activity on apricots was way up this year and the sell through was good and our growers ended up bringing in a beautiful crop of 'cots. So we do have one record crop other than cherries that we can talk about this year.

It's National Farm Safety & Health Week and the Washington Farm Bureau would like to remind everyone that successfully preventing injuries and illnesses is accomplished by regular review of safety and health procedures in the workplace. To help with that Farm Bureau has a simple checklist for members to review to see if they have sufficient policies and procedures in place to eliminate workplace hazards. Tomorrow WFB Safety Director Jeff Lutz will be with us to talk about the numerous expert safety services and programs WFB also provides for its members to help them create a safer workplace and prevent worker injuries.
