Local Choice Food Box

For those wanting to eat healthy while supporting local growers Growing Washington’s The Local Choice Food Box, a community supported agriculture program, makes perfect sense. Gabrielle Santerre, Program Manager for The Local Choice Food Box explains.

SANTERRE: Basically what that means is folks sign-up with us for the whole summer season and they get a box of fresh produce every week. It’s a great way for our members who are concerned about eating local organic and or pesticide free food to support local farmers all in one box without having to actually go shopping around.

Their flagship farm, Alm Hill Gardens located in Everson, is the primary source for a lot of their produce for their CSA, but Santerre says they also work with a number of other local farmers to provide their members with a variety of local foods.

SANTERRE: From dairy products to mushrooms to stone fruits. And then with our program you can either let us pick what’s in your box, which is like a traditional CSA where the farmer picks what you get each week, or you can actually log into our website and customize your box and specify exactly what you want each week.

The Local Choice Food Box continues to grow their produce choices, membership, and delivery area each year.

SANTERRE: We’re over 1,200 customers this year. In terms of how many farmers we work with, we’ve worked with up to fifty different farms before - not all at the same time. It depends on the season and what people have available, but at any given week we’re working with at least fifteen to twenty farmers.

Tomorrow Santerre will talk more about how to become a member and their site-host and workplace delivery. For more information visit growingwashington.org.
