Leonard Wood is weaning calves at the Bar VX ranch in Sand point. “We are taking the bull calves off, putting them on feed and then the heifers and steers will go back out on grass now that they are weaned.” There is a spring in his step because, according to Drovers, the demand for beef is rising and beef prices are expected to stay high. “Steers especially are 165 to 170. That was through a livestock market this morning market report. They have been fluctuating from 160 up but, it changes of course. Heifer calves are a dime off of that.” In fact prices spiked at $180 and could keep going upwards. That’s because people are making more money, they love to barbecue and the industry continues to grow consumer demand. That has to make Leonard kind of happy. “Yes if it’ll hold on until we get the calves weaned and out of the mountains, we will be in good shape.” Wood’s red Angus are off the range and now in pasture and expected to do well in the market.
