Gordon Vail, Ph.D., Syngenta's technical product lead for herbicides regarding weed resistance. "When you look at weed resistance and how it developed there are two factors. One is the weed's genetic diversity. Two is the method of control. I will start with the method of control. What we see time and time again is that growers tend to use the same method of control. In other words, they are relying completely on herbicides or they are relying completely on a specific product. In the case of resistance we are seeing today, in things like water hemp and giant ragweed and other weeds, have glyphosate resistance and that is using the same single mode of action over and over again. That is what happened when they are growing corn or corn on corn, they are not rotating the chemistry. Basically you are selecting for those plants that have the ability to develop resistance. Those plants have the ability to spread their resistance through pollen. When you start getting into pollen flow, that is when resistance really spreads fast. So it is about repeated use and not adding diversity. We talked about Acuron, one of the key things about Acuron is that we have put all of these ingredients together and that helps to alleviate the development of resistance because you have multiple products or multiple active ingredients.
