A group opposed to genetically modified organisms and glyphosate took to Capitol Hill to hold hearings with congressional staffers.  Zen Honeycutt is the founder of Moms Across America, a group whose mission is to “raise awareness about GMOs and toxic exposure.” Honeycutt explains: “I asked myself how could I raise awareness about GMO’s in the shortest amount of time while reaching the largest number of people.”

Despite years of research, Honeycutt claims there are no long-term studies by independent scientists that prove GMO’s are safe. Honeycutt says she filed a Freedom of Information Act request to the Environmental Protection Agency and found studies showing proof behind the lack of safety behind GMO’s and herbicides like glyphosate.

That said, during a webinar conducted in May, the National Academy of Sciences released its study on the safety of food coming from genetically engineered crops. Dr. Fred Gould of North Carolina State University stated the report concludes that genetically modified organisms cause no more health problems for people than other foods. Dr. Fred Gould of North Carolina State University is the chair of the 20 member volunteer group that worked for two years to prepare the study for the National Academy of Sciences.
