Are Plastic garbage bags safe for handling game meat? This is Tom with Sportsman spotlight. Recently I boned out an animal, placed the meat in white Glad garbage bags and hauled it into the butcher shop to be processed into hamburger and summer sausage for the holidays. When I brought the meat in using my white Glad bags with the Red plastic tie string on it.... You know the type. One of the Meat handlers told me that the Plastic garbage bags were not safe to store food in due to chemical residue and insecticide laced into the plastic from the manufacture. Countless times I have seen garbage bags used by outdoorsmen to handle meat. I wanted to get to the bottom of this so I Called up Glad. Here is part of my phone conversation with a Glad customer service representative.

To clarify, The Glad products customer service desk confirmed that there is no harmful chemicals used with the generic bags and if you are using their products for handling food don't use the scented or fragrance style garbage bags.

Just a heads up, plastic bags are not great for packing out game. They don't breath like a normal cloth game bag. Plastic bags are best used for storing meet in the freezer.
