Hunting Blacktail

Hunting Blacktail

I've always wondered how hunting Blacktail deer compares to the whitetail and muleys I grew up hunting. Well, the other day I was lucky enough to have one of my good friends Lane Andreassen stop by and share more on the topic.

Matt "What kind of terrain do you guys hunt those blacktail in?"

Lane "I grew up on about a 600 acre lot down there in Willamette Valley. This property is a lot of trees and a lot of brush and everything and it makes it really really difficult. Blacktail deer, they're really a skittish deer in my opinion. They're one of the hardest deer to hunt, they're not the kind of deer that are out in the open all the time walking around. It seems like you see whitetail deer out in the fields and these bucks, I swear they know when the hunting season is because they'll get in the timber and you try to get in there and walk around and we struggle with a lot of black berry vines, poison oak, and a lot of invasive weeds that are like a vine. It's really hard unless you go in and log out a hunting area and you can do a lot of pre work before the hunting season and prep you area. You know now days we actually set up a lot of tree stands. So that's kind of what has been working well with us, kind of waiting out the deer instead of going to them."

I think I'd be on the same page, I'm not a huge thorn bush fan myself. There's nothing wrong with a good tree stand, especially if the deer are already edge.
