Christina DeWitt is the Director of the Seafood Laboratory which is an Institute under the umbrella of Oregon State University. She took time to explain exactly how these types of operations interact with food producers. “All land grant schools have a threefold mission. Teaching, research and outreach. The land grants were formed, not just to have the teaching, research and outreach occur on campus, but also to be out in the community where stakeholders are grappling with questions of production. OSU has 11 experiment stations around the state strategically located in areas of production that are uniquely different from each other. There is one in Hood River focused on tree fruit production. There is one in Klamath which is focused on irrigated crop production. One out in Burns which is range management issues. The idea is that you are doing research which is relevant to the stake holders and the issues they are facing as they are trying to be economically viable.”
