I talked with assistant hunting manager Randy Rust from Sportsmen's Warehouse about hunting black tail in western Oregon. "Out here we have black tail. We have mule deer on the eastern part of the state but on the Western side it is mostly black tail. Do you do a lot of black tail hunting? Not a lot anymore, I used to do it when I was younger. I just don't get out as much as I would like to. I hear that they are extremely elusive. Absolutely. You are talking brush country in the Western part of the state and that makes it hard to come upon them. They have so many places to hide. They hear you coming, they smell you coming, it's just hard to stay out of sight. I used to love hunting in the rain because the rain covers your smell, the sounds, the rain covers everything. You come across them a lot easier when it is pouring down rain. What did you use when you hunted them? My old lever action Winchester 30-30. It was a short barrel and that's great when you're maneuvering through the brush.
