Cartwright Sound Charters

Jim Hall of Cartwright Sound Charters, up in the Queen Charlotte Islands off the coast of British Columbia talked about his outfitting service. We have been in operation for about 25 years. We run for boats each one holding for people. We fish the west side of the Charlottes. We have runs of Chinook. If we could be up there today, weather permitting, we would be catching fish. Those runs go all the way through November. We are open from 20 May through the fifth or sixth of September . The reason the Queen Charlotte’s are such a premier fishery is because our fish are transitory fish. They are not going up rivers on the islands to spawn. They are just passing through. They are feeding on the kelp beds where you have needle fish and herring and they are ferociously fattening up for their last four or five weeks before they go up the river. We catch 50 pounders which are rare, but we also get a lot of 30 pounds and 40 pounds and sometimes 50 pounds.
