Pasture and Rangeland Condition

Pasture and Rangeland Condition

Across the nation, more rain means good news for much of the nation when it comes to the most recent pasture and rangeland conditions. One area suffering from too much rain is Louisiana. USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says although normally this time of year, conditions deteriorate — 51 percent of the nation's pastures and rangeland is rated good to excellent. However in the West there has been deterioration as Rippey explains

Rippey: "We see a this point Oregon at the top of the Western list at 49 percent very poor to poor. We have also have the fact that we have a significant drought in the Northeast. So we see some very low pasture condition in that area that are not accustom to drought."

In addition in Oregon only 22 percent of its rangeland and pasture rated good to excellent. In Idaho pasture and rangeland condition is rated 36 percent good to excellent and 27 percent rated very poor to poor. In Washington 50 percent of the pasture was rated good to excellent and 24 percent very poor to poor.

USDA Market Reporter Health Dewey shares Colorado's ratings

Dewey: "Pasture and rangeland conditions percentages were 3 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 57 percent good and 9 percent excellent. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor Weekly Comparison, Colorado D0 category increased to 34 percent and D1 remains unchanged at 1.47 percent."
