June Cattle on Feed Report

Last week's USDA Cattle on Feed Report surprised most analysts with nearly not as high placements as as predicted nationally occurring in the June report. However, in our region cattle placed on feed in June was up double digits from a year ago. USDA Shayle Shagam gives a national update

Shagam: "The number of cattle on feed on July first in feedlots of capacity of 1,000 head or greater was just under 10.4 million head which was about 1 percent above a year ago. Feedlots placed about 1.5 million head during June which was 3 percent above a year earlier. Feedlots marketed about 1.9 million head during June which was 9 percent above a year earlier."

In Idaho, the number of cattle on feed was 235,000 head, which 4 percent lower than the previous month, and up 2 percent from a year ago. An estimated 38,000 head were placed on feed down 7 percent from the previous month but up 23 percent compared to a year earlier.

In Washington, the number of cattle on feed was down from a year ago by 17 percent at 195,000 head which was the same from the previous month but 9 percent lower than a year ago. An estimated 41,000 head were placed on feed down 15 percent from the previous month but up 37 percent compared to a year earlier.

In Colorado, the number of cattle on feed in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or greater was estimated at 850,000 head as of July first. That was 2 percent above last year, but down 4 percent below the previous month's inventory. An estimated 105,000 cattle and calves were placed on feed during June, 22 precent below the previous month's placements but 31 percent above a year ago.
