Young Cattlemen's Message in Washington, D.C.

While in Washington, D.C. for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Young Cattlemen Conference Burns, Oregon rancher Steven Doverspike had the opportunity to meet with some of his elected officials and provide information on several issues concerning the beef industry.
Doverspike: “After seeing everything and going to Capitol Hill and explaining all of the current issues that the beef industry is going through. Especially with the West with the Antiquities Act, the Endangered Species Act then the Trans Pacific Partnership or TPP. If this goes through we will go from a 38.5 percent tariff rate in Japan down to a 9 percent tariff rate in Japan. It would be an opportunity for $367,000 in sales a day to the Japanese market. Australia already has a trade partnership with Japan and are our leading competitor. Their trade tariff is at 11 percent. If this went through we would be under them. The Japanese consumer loves American beef much more than Australian beef because it is corn-fed not grass-fed. It will be a huge step for the beef industry if this passes. I explained a lot of these things. They really didn’t know all the small things and the statistics for the beef industry.”
He added that all the pundits they met with said not to expect any decisions on TPP until after the November election.
