An Inspiring 4-H Youth

An Inspiring 4-H Youth

I had the opportunity to visit the Walla Walla Fair and Frontier Days this week. Whenever I’m at a fair, I naturally gravitate to the beef barn. Livestock barns in general are my most favorite place at fairs. It brings back so many fantastic memories of family and friends and time well-spent showing cattle. I asked 4-Her and 12-year old Macy Thomas if I could interview her and she gave me a quick smile and a nod. Here is what she had to say about what she has gained from her 4-H experience.
Thomas: “I really like showing steers because showing in 4-H in general just teaches you good skills in life: to cooperate with others, to work hard, to get things done on time.”
I asked her how much she was hoping to sale her steer, Snickers, for at the auction this weekend. She shares
Thomas: “I’m going to try for $3.50 a pound. At the Hermiston County Fair, I got $4.10 and that was really good thats about $6,000. Most of that will go to college. Some of that will go to what I want to do.”
She continues with how much time and practice she had with her steer prior to arriving at the fair.
Thomas: “Worked with my steer to get all of the issues out of him. Such as if he was running ahead of me or not wanting to lead. That took me about three months. Then probably another two months on the details like getting his feet to set correctly and training the hair.”
