New Conservation Opportunity for Grass, Range and Pasture Lands

New Conservation Opportunity for Grass, Range and Pasture Lands

Beginning September 1st, ranchers can apply for financial assistance to help conserve working grasslands, rangelands and pastureland while maintaing the areas for livestock grazing. These grassland incentives are part of the voluntary Conservation Reserve Program. Washington State Farm Service Agency Farm Program Chief Rod Hamilton shares
Hamilton: “It allows us to enroll primary lands that has already used for grazing operations in a contract similar to CRP. We will make annual payments. The rates have not been determined yet. They are going to be based on about 75 percent of the grazing value. The contracts, we think, will be about 15 years. Pretty much anybody who has well managed existing grazing land can submit in the hopper to enroll.”
Hamilton continues
Hamilton: “If anybody who is in the livestock industry who is grazing land, has interested in the program; there is really nothing lost by filing an application. They would apply in the local FSA office that serves the county where their land is located. The application period will start on September first. We will accept applications year round but we will have these periodic batching periods where we will rank existing offers and award contracts to the top ranking offers. That first rank period is suppose to start around November 20th.”
