WTO Appellate Body Ruling on COOL

Yesterday the World Trade Organization’s Appellate Body ruled for the fourth and final time against the United States Country of Origin Labeling or COOL requirements for meat holding the compliance panel’s report in finding against the United States.
Field Reporter Greg Martin has more.
Martin: “National Cattlemen’s Beef Association President and Wyoming cattleman, Philip Ellis said the next step is retaliation. He said QUOTE ‘We have long said that COOL is not just burdensome and costly to cattle producers, it is generally ignored by consumers and violates our international trade obligations,” said Ellis. “Now that the WTO has ruled for a fourth time that this rule discriminates against Canadian and Mexican livestock, the next step is retaliation by Canada and Mexico. Retaliation will irreparably harm our economy and our relationships with our top trading partners and send a signal to the world that the U.S. doesn't play by the rules. It is long past time that Congress repeal this broken regulation.’UNQUOTE.”
In light of the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) ruling against the U.S., House Agriculture Committee Chairman K. Michael Conaway will introduce legislation to repeal the Country of Origin Labeling requirements for beef, pork and chicken. The Agriculture Committee will hold a business meeting to consider the bill on Wednesday, May 20.
With this final ruling both Canada and Mexico are now authorized to impose billions of dollars of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. good as soon as August or September.
